ECO ENGINEERING

With our 60 years of combined experience in the lithium battery industry, we have designed, produced, and recycled lithium-ion batteries. This has enabled us to accumulate a wealth of knowledge in the field.

At NOWOS, we believe sustainability is essential from the design phase. With our eco-engineering approach, we collaborate closely with our customers to create batteries that minimise waste and are easy to repair, reuse, refurbish and repurpose.

What is eco-engineering?

Eco-engineering involves integrating environmental protection into the design and management of systems. It aims to reduce environmental degradation and enhance ecosystem functionality throughout the lifecycle of these systems, from planning and implementation to long-term maintenance such as extraction of raw materials, production, distribution, use and end-of-life.

It is characterized by a global vision of these environmental impacts with a multi-stage approach that considers the various stages of the life cycle and multiple criteria such as material and energy consumption, discharges into the natural environment, and effects on climate and biodiversity.

CASE STUDY:
ROETZ BIKES

CHALLENGE

  • Roetz Bikes is a Dutch Circular & Sustainable Designer and manufacturer of Bikes

  • Roetz approached NOWOS with a need to develop a new sustainable battery solution for their e-bikes. They required detailed specifications for both functional and hardware behavior to ensure the batteries met all necessary standards and performance criteria.

SOLUTION

In 8 months, NOWOS was able to enhance and provide precise guidance to the battery manufacturer, which included:

  • Detailed functional behavior requirements

  • Comprehensive hardware behavior requirements

  • A thorough quality control (QC) process to ensure the final product met Roetz's standards

In addition, NOWOS acted as the technical liaison between Roetz Bikes and the battery manufacturer, ensuring clear communication and that all technical needs were understood and fulfilled.

CASE STUDY: EBEE

CHALLENGE

  • eBee is on a mission to lead the adoption of light-electric vehicles in Africa with the production of 1 million e-bicycles on the road.

  • eBee asked NOWOS to design a battery that could be maintained and produced in Africa, with the goal of giving the battery a second-life in home energy storage once it reached end-of-life in its primary application.

SOLUTION

In just over a year, NOWOS developed all hardware, software, and mechanical designs in-house to produce a highly versatile battery including:

  • A modem for remote monitoring and control

  • GPS for live tracking

  • Anti-theft

  • Repairable and reusable for energy storage

  • G-force sensor to monitor mechanical health

  • WiFi and Bluetooth for direct communication with the user

  • Monitoring capabilities to track real-time battery health

BENEFITS TO THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY

The battery is designed for ease of maintenance, repair and production in Africa, which can be repurposed for home energy storage, extending its lifecycle and minimizing waste.

OUR EXPERTS

WE CONSULT ON

    • Safety and ageing of cells

  • Testing Processes

Depending on your needs, we can assess the performance of both the cells and the battery management system (BMS). For example, we can propose solutions to strengthen the mechanical design of the case to provide better protection against moisture. Alternatively, we can work with you to develop a detailed battery specification and advise on the best possible configuration. Together, we test prototype batteries and offer recommendations to improve the design before the final version is approved.

The result? A final product that is not only energy efficient, but also durable and easy to maintain.
